If you're looking for a fun way to get some movement into your weekend, a hash is a great way to do it!
Hashing is similar to an Orientierungslauf (i.e. orienteering, but more relaxed and social and without a compass and map. One or two people called 'hares' set a trail through city streets, forests, parks, etc. The trail is marked using chalk or flour (or polenta in the winter). Later, all the participants meet at a designated location, and walk or run along the trail…but it's not as simple as it sounds. The hares have marked the correct route with arrows, but every so often the hashers find a circle (or a circle with a "C" in it) which was 'set' by the hare. This is called a checkpoint, and it means that the trail might proceed in any direction from that spot. How to decide? Runners check out the possibilities, often allowing the everyone to catch up and regroup. A false trail is usually marked with an "X". The hasher finding the good trail (the next arrow) shouts "ON ON!", showing everyone the way to proceed. This repeats until everyone meets at the end (which often oddly resembles the beginning). Participants then celebrate. ON ON!!
